Louis Gallow, Kingston Penitentiary, and Penal Reform

An Exclusive Event at The Grimsby Museum

Join us at the Grimsby Museum on March 29th at 1pm for the second component to our "True Crime Talk" series featuring an engaging presentation by Cameron Willis

Pre-registration is required for this event. For registration and further details please click here

This talk explores the significant changes in the Canadian federal prison system during the 20th century, particularly at Kingston Penitentiary, through the life of Louis Gallow. Arriving at Kingston in 1919 as a teenager, Gallow was paroled in 1978 after spending decades in prison. His experiences highlight key developments, such as prison riots, professionalization of staff, reforms in discipline, the rise of rehabilitative programs, and the creation of low-security prisons. By examining Gallow’s life, the talk sheds light on how prisoners experienced and viewed these changes throughout the century.

Cursed – The Black Donnellys of Biddulph County

A special event at the Grimsby Museum

Join us at the Grimsby Museum April 12th from 1pm-3pm for the third component of our "True Crime Talk" series featuring a thrilling presentation from Kieth Leckie regarding his novel “Cursed – The Black Donnellys of Biddulph County”

Pre-registration is required for this event. For registration and further information click here

Based on the true story of the "Black" Donnellys, this epic novel is a tale of feuds, love, and vengeance spanning generations. Set against the backdrop of 1845 Ireland, Jim Donnelly, the rebellious son of dispossessed parents, falls in love with Johannah Magee, the daughter of an affluent estate manager. Fleeing Ireland to escape their past, they hope for a fresh start in Canada, but the violence and vendettas of their homeland follow them to rural Ontario. In Lucan, Ontario, Jim is convicted of murder after a deadly brawl and sent to Kingston Prison for 15 years. Upon his return, Jim finds his family, led by his powerful wife Johannah, becoming notorious in Biddulph County. The Donnelly family, consisting of Jim's seven sons and daughter, is both beloved and feared, with each member having their own distinct personality and reputation. As Jim settles old scores, tensions rise in the community. Resentment toward the Donnellys builds, culminating in a violent mob attack on the family’s farm on February 4, 1880, with the goal of eradicating the Donnelly clan once and for all.
