Gibson Street Pedestrian Bridge Opens
Grimsby, ON – The new Gibson Street Bridge is now open to the public. Located on Gibson Street, approximately 70 metres west of Mountain Road, the bridge serves as an important link in the Bruce Trail network, creating the opportunity for pedestrians to cross the Forty Mile Creek.
The existing bridge was closed for public safety in 2020 due to the condition of the underlying steel. The Town retained the structural engineering firm Ellis Engineering Ltd. to design and administer a project for a new bridge to replace the existing structure. The construction project was facilitated by Anthony’s Excavating Central Ltd. with the bridge being manufactured by AMG Metals Inc.
Notable features of the new bridge include:
- A new aluminum structure with wood (Ipe) decking.
- Ramps at each end of the bridge to improve pedestrian accessibility and safety.
- Integrated lighting on the bridge.
- An interpretive plaque describing the history of the area (to be added at a later date).
The approximate total cost of the project is $340,000, with $235,000 being provided by the provincial and federal governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Grant Program.
“We would like to thank our project team as well as our provincial and federal partners, including MP Allison and MPP Oosterhoff, for their support of this important project bridging the gap over the Forty Mile Creek”, said Mayor Jeff Jordan.
