Ground breaking Ceremony for Historic 35 Victoria Terrace

Yesterday we celebrated history! Mayor Jeff Jordan, Members of Council, Town Staff, along with Grimsby’s Heritage Committee Chair Sara Nixon, as well as Grimsby Historical Society members and President Wayne Mullins, gathered for a ground-breaking ceremony to officially commence the restoration of a historic cottage on Victoria Terrace in the Grimsby Beach Community.

This historic area is a well-known location in Grimsby. Grimsby Beach is known as the first Chautauqua of Canada, a Methodist movement that started in the United States. While relicts of these movements exist in Canada, Grimsby holds one of the oldest and largest collections of original cottages, a legacy we are proud to protect.

George Barber and Barb Kettle have spent the last two years perfecting the restoration plans for the original 1880s folk Victorian cottage along side the Town’s heritage planners. George and Barb plan to ensure the restoration of the cottage is done in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for Historic Places in Canada.

The historic cottage will be formally recognized as an important historic site within Grimsby through designation under the Ontario Heritage Act, following the completion of the extensive restoration.

The Town strongly believes that heritage we protect today will shape the legacy we leave for generations to come.
