Information Release - Heritage Matters - September 7, 2023

After clarification from the Ministry, and consultation with the Town’s legal team, the Town will be amending the information made available on the website that is required for properties with heritage protections (Listed and Designated on the Register).

In accordance with changes to the Ontario Heritage Act, municipalities are required to provide information online for all properties on the Municipal Heritage Register, including Listed properties (short-term protection) and Designated properties (long-term protection). The information required for listed and designated properties differs. The requirement came into effect on July 1, 2023. The information required for Listed properties includes:

  • A statement explaining the cultural heritage value or interest of the property; and
  • A description of the heritage attributes of the property.

Properties that are designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act require the following information to be made public on the Town’s website:

  • A legal description of the property; and
  • The name and address of the owner; and
  • A statement explaining the cultural heritage value or interest of the property and a description of the heritage attributes of the property.

The Town previously posted the property owners name, image of the property, and legal description for Listed properties on the Municipal Heritage Register only. The list was made available on the Towns' website and was removed on August 5, 2023.The revised list will be reposted when updates to the information have been made. The Town would like to note that no changes have been made to the protections on Listed properties on the Municipal Heritage Register.

Designated property owners will be notified via mail that their names will be available online in accordance with the Act in the coming weeks. If designated property owners would like to have their names removed from the list, they must contact the Planning Department at planning@grimsby.ca. The notification to property owners will include further instructions, including the date that the information will be made public. The Town will post a version of the list without property owners names in the interim, and will update the list with property owners names who have not requested removal once the chosen date has passed.
