Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee Launches “Accessibility Matters Here” Campaign
The Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee (JAAC), a volunteer committee aimed to promote and regulate AODA initiatives within Niagara, representing the municipalities of Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln, Pelham, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Port Colborne, is proud to announce the launch of its new campaign: “Accessibility Matters Here.”
This initiative aims to highlight local businesses and organizations or municipalities that are exceeding expectations to make their spaces more inclusive and accessible to individuals with disabilities.
Spearheaded by dedicated JAAC members, the “Accessibility Matters Here” campaign includes on-the-ground assessments throughout the year. Committee volunteers will visit locations in participating municipalities and complete a detailed accessibility checklist. This evaluation covers key elements, including exterior and interior access, as well as customer service practices. In addition to these reviews, JAAC members also offer interactive awareness sessions to help organizations better understand accessibility needs in their communities.
Organizations, businesses, or municipalities that score 80% or higher on the assessment will receive an “Accessibility Matters Here” decal to proudly display at their premises, signifying their commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
To celebrate and honour these efforts, an official awards ceremony will be held during National Accessibility Week, from May 25 to May 31, 2025, at local Council Meetings. The event will offer public recognition for those who are leading the way in making Niagara more accessible.
“We believe that accessibility is everyone’s responsibility,” says Donna Herrington, JAAC Accessibility Consultant. “Through this campaign, we hope to not only recognize accessibility champions but also inspire others to make meaningful changes in their spaces.”
